BMW Boxer Cup round two highlights

The second round of the BMW Boxer Cup took place on Saturday afternoon at Le Mans on the eve of the Grand Prix Polini de France, whetting the appetite of a huge MotoGP crowd with a typically dramatic race.

Double series winner Stephane Mertens, who clinched the title in 2001 and 2002 before a season sabbatical, returns this year and looked as though he would make it a perfect homecoming as he stormed into an early lead.

However, the Belgian crashed out and left victory to the pole holder Thomas Hinterreiter, whilst behind the Austrian a typically hard-fought battle took place for the final podium positions, Markus Barth and Brian Parriott, winner of the first round at Daytona, eventually sealing second and third place respectively.
