Michels wins Red Bull Rookies opener

Thirteen year-old Steven Michels (3) struck the first blow in the Red Bull Rookies Cup to MotoGP, with round one of the series designed to nurture German talent taking place at the Sachsenring recently.

With all the riders on identical Honda RS 125 machinery, Michels started from pole position and managed to hold off his rival Max Durrenberger, who was one of the top riders from last year's edition of the series.

Third place went to 18 year-old Jennifer Kaulbach(18), also in her second season in the competition, and only the second time a female has stood on the podium in the championship's history.

The Red Bull Rookies Cup to MotoGP is a similar project to the Spanish version run by Telefonica Movistar which paved the way to Grand Prix for 125cc World Champion Dani Pedrosa. The German version has already been hailed a success after the emergence of Georg Fröhlich, who is competing all the European rounds of the 125cc World Championship this season.
