Last lap on board with Gibernau at Le Mans

With his victory at the Grand Prix Polini de France last week, Sete Gibernau proved beyond doubt that he can no longer be considered simply a wet specialist, following up his imperious performance in the rain at Jerez with an equally dominant display in the dry. Gibernau's win at Le Mans was his second in three races and consolidated his position as the early series leader on 66 points.

The Telefonica Movistar Honda rider fought for the lead in the early stages of the race with Carlos Checa, passing his compatriot at the halfway point and opening up a gap which would prove crucial in the final lap.

Despite his comfortable advantage there was drama awaiting Gibernau in the final corners of the race, when a group of back-markers scrapping desperately for the final couple of points on offer for the top fifteen finishers, threatened to hold up the Spaniard and allow Checa and third placed Max Biaggi a late opportunity to steal victory.
