Shane Byrne recovering from hand injury

Shane Byrne says he is hopeful the extra week ahead of the Gran Premio Cinzano d'Italia will prove enough time for him to fully recover from the broken hand injury he sustained at Jerez almost a month ago. The British Superbike Champion was unable to take part in the race at Le Mans because of the injury but he should return to action at Mugello.

"I've been having laser treatment in England over the past couple of weeks and the hand is much better," explained Byrne. "The fracture is healing well but there is still a lot of scar tissue and bruising.

"Basically I couldn't ride at Le Mans because my hand wasn't strong enough after two weeks in a cast, but it is much stronger now and I think I'll be okay. Obviously it might be a bit different when I've got over 200 horsepower pulling at it but I've got another week before I ride so I reckon it'll be fine."

The MotoGP experience continued for Byrne last weekend even though there wasn't a race, as he turned out to an Aprilia fans' reception in Italy. "I had to pretend to be famous for the day so it was quite strange really!" laughed the 26 year old. "It was a nice event to be a part of and it was great to see how much support we'll have from all the Aprilia fans at Mugello."
