Last year at Mugello

Manuel Poggiali took his third victory of the season in last year's 250cc race at Mugello, cantering to the line with a 22 second advantage over second-placed Fonsi Nieto after a double crash for pole setter Randy De Puniet.

The Aprilia trio had lapped together after leaving the rest of the field behind with a scorching pace over the early laps, but Nieto eventually dropped back to leave a straight duel between the men who had fought for pole position in qualifying.

De Puniet lost his front end and slid into the gravel on the 14th lap but he rejoined the battle for third place with Franco Battaini, Sylvain Guintoli and Roby Rolfo, who were all closing the gap on the lonely Fonsi Nieto in second.

De Puniet moved to the front of the group but crashed again with three laps to go and was this time unable to remount. The Frenchman's place on the podium was gladly accepted by Battaini, but victory for Poggiali moved him nineteen points clear of Rolfo at the top of the standings after Elias could only manage sixth.
