Tamada hoping to ignite season in Italy

Makoto Tamada says he is hoping to kick-start a disappointing season so far on familiar ground at Mugello this weekend. The Japanese rider has his European base just a few kilometres from the Tuscan circuit and scored his best result of the season here last year, finishing fourth to cap an amazing comeback after crossing the line in nineteenth place after the first lap.

"I'm delighted to be going to Mugello, because the track is so beautiful," commented Tamada, who actually stood on the podium later in the 2003 season at Motegi but was later disqualified for a pass on Sete Gibernau. "Last year, without any prior testing experience there I felt good straight away.

"In the race I was nineteenth after the first lap but by the end I had clawed my way up to fourth place. So it was at this race that I showed my ability to battle with the best for the first time, and that I could challenge for the podium.

"This year we have already shown that we can go fast in testing, and now we only have to get right the life of the rear tyre during the race, but we are getting there.

"The test after the Le Mans race gave optimum results and I believe that we have found the best technical balance on our RC211V, which in my opinion could work well on any kind of circuit."
