Hopkins ruled out of Mugello

John Hopkins has been ruled out of the Gran Premio Cinzano d'Italia after an examination at the Mugello circuit on Thursday afternoon revealed insufficient fusion in the broken thumb he sustained in a first lap crash at Le Mans three weeks ago. Hopkins had worked around the clock with laser treatment and strengthening exercises including deep sea fishing on the thumb, but was forced to admit that this weekend's event had come a little too soon.

"It's only a broken thumb but the way the break is, the doctors have told me that it could come right off if I had another crash," revealed Hopkins. "It's so frustrating because the crash wasn't even my fault, and now I have to sit tight and hope the bone heals by next week.

"The other thing is that if I ride under strength I'm at even greater risk of an accident. I was in front of Shane Byrne when he went straight at Le Mans and he flashed past me. I don't want to be in that sort of situation at the end of the straight here going 240km/h – no thanks!

"It's another difficult situation to battle through but that's racing and I'll be back – hopefully sooner rather than later."
