Gibernau stands up to early pressure

Sete Gibernau sent out a clear message to the Italian invasion trying to topple him from the top of the MotoGP rider standings by setting the quickest time of the first free practice session at Mugello this morning.

Thousands of fans are already making their way in to the Italian venue as the pressure slowly begins to rise, but Gibernau responded with a fastest lap of 1'51.697 to hold off the challenge of Valentino Rossi, who uncharacteristically ran off track. Makoto Tamada and Marco Melandri crashed.

Sebastian Porto continued his scorching practice pace in the 250cc class, lapping over a second quicker than his rivals for the majority of the first free practice before ending the session with a 1.032 second advantage over Randy De Puniet.

Andrea Dovizioso and Roberto Locatelli continued their personal head-to-head battle in the 125cc class, setting the first and second fastest times respectively.
