Porto shakes of jetlag with Mugello pole

Sebastián Porto only arrived at the Mugello circuit late yesterday afternoon after missing his flight from Argentina on Tuesday but shook off any lingering jetlag with provisional pole position for the 250cc race in cool conditions this afternoon.

Porto's time of 1'55.072 was over a second and a half slower than Randy De Puniet's pole record from last season but was almost a full second quicker the Frenchman today, mirroring an excellent sequence of qualifying performances in the first three rounds of the season that he has yet to match in any of the races.

Series leader De Puniet was again Porto's closest challenger today, with a close battle ensuing for the remaining two front row positions between Alex De Angelis, Toni Elias and Manuel Poggiali. De Angelis qualified third fastest despite a heavy crash at the end of the session, whilst Elias clinched fourth to break the Aprilia monopoly on board his Honda.

Franco Battaini proved that he can be a force to be reckoned with at his home circuit despite not riding factory machinery as he qualified sixth fastest ahead of factory Honda star Dani Pedrosa, with fellow Aprilia privateer Anthony West completing the second row in eighth.
