Gibernau leads BMW Award for first time

Sete Gibernau's sensational pole position time at Mugello on Friday afternoon not only sealed front spot on the starting grid for Sunday's Gran Premio Cinzano d'Italia, it also gave him the lead in the coveted BMW Award – 2004 MotoGP Best Qualifier standings for the first time.

Gibernau became the first rider to knock Valentino Rossi off the top of the prestigious chart since its inception at the start of the 2003 season, opening up a 0.103 second advantage over the Italian with twelve rounds remaining. Nicky Hayden's impressive performance today moved him up to third place ahead of Max Biaggi, 2.213 seconds adrift of Rossi.

The BMW Award – 2004 MotoGP Best Qualifier is sponsored by BMW, who are offering a top of the range 645Ci to the rider with the lowest accumulated qualifying times over the course of the season, added to their registry in the 45-minute televised session in the Official Test at Catalunya in March.
