Jenkner smashes Mugello pole record

Steve Jenkner set a new pole record at Mugello with a lap of 1'58.575 to snatch front spot on the grid for the 125cc race from previous record holder Casey Stoner. The young Australian had already dipped below his own previous best to top the time sheets in an entertaining finale to the session after qualifying a miserable 24th on the provisional grid.

However, Jenkner's late lap ousted Stoner by 0.302 seconds, with late attacks from home pair Mattia Pasini and Andrea Dovizioso, the current series leader, sealing the final two front row spots.

Former World Champion Roberto Locatelli, who lies second in the standings behind Dovizioso, was fifth fastest and heads up the second row from Mika Kallio, provisional pole holder Hector Barbera and Jorge Lorenzo, who had qualified second fastest yesterday.
