Rossi leads Yamaha response

Valentino Rossi responded to Sete Gibernau's war cry at Mugello to lead Yamaha colleague Carlos Checa in the second free practice session at the Italian circuit this morning. Gibernau set a sensational pole record yesterday but promised to work purely on race set-up this morning, clocking the third fastest time of the session on his Honda.

Makoto Tamada continued his love affair with Mugello with the fourth quickest time on the Bridgestone-shod Honda, ahead of factory colleagues Alex Barros, Nicky Hayden, Colin Edwards and Max Biaggi.

In the 250cc class it was a typical day at the office for Sebastian Porto, who smashed his Aprilia to pieces in a spectacular crash before setting the third fastest time of the session on his second machine. Dani Pedrosa continued his crusade against Aprilia at their home circuit with the quickest time on board his Honda.

Steve Jenkner set the pace in the 125cc class, lapping under pole record time to top the time sheets from Hector Barbera and Andrea Dovizioso.
