Melandri to undergo arm operation

Marco Melandri has revealed that he is planning to undergo an operation during the summer break to cure an arm-pump problem which has been dogging him for several seasons. The condition is common in motorcycle racing as the forearm muscles are worked so hard that they expand beyond the natural limit and trap nerves in the arm, requiring incisions in the membrane sleeve. Only last week 250cc rider Toni Elias underwent surgery for a similar problem.

"I have been suffering with the problem since my 250cc days but obviously with a 990cc four-stroke it is much more serious," commented Melandri. "It is very painful and it's affecting my performance in the second half of the race.

"I will spend the next few weeks gathering advice from different surgeons and I'll have the operation during the summer break. If I do it after Donington then I should have enough time to recover for Brno."
