Melandri leaves hospital

Marco Melandri was discharged from hospital on Thursday morning after spending a night under observation following his successful ‘arm-pump' operation on Wednesday. Melandri, who scored his maiden MotoGP podium at Catalunya on Sunday, remained in Barcelona to undergo surgery at the experienced hands of Dr. Xavier Mir at the University Institute Dexeus.

Melandri was treated for Compartmental Syndrome, otherwise known as ‘arm-pump'. "The syndrome happens when the muscles cannot expand outwards, and expand inwards instead," explained Doctor Mir. "This restricts the nerves and causes a loss of strength and feeling in the hand.

"The surgery consists of opening the sleeve around the muscle to allow maximum flex under extreme force. It is very common amongst professional motorcycle racers. Marco will be fit to ride at Assen on 26th June."
