Randy Mamola picks out his star performers from Catalunya

For this week's Expert Eye I want to talk about Catalunya, of course, the championship and how competitive it is, but first I want to talk about three riders in the race at Catalunya.

The first one is Marco Melandri, who finished third – his first podium – and I just thought it was fantastic to hear his voice say that he has been waiting a year and a half to be on the podium. It was good to have somebody different up there.

The next rider I want to talk about is Ruben Xaus. Ruben's race time was 44'26 – that would have put him third and on the podium last year.

The third rider I want to talk about is Shinya Nakano – we all know what happened to him the week before and he bounced back from that to finish seventh. He was only one second behind Xaus and a second slower than his race time from last year, when he finished fifth riding the Yamaha.

For me that's a huge comeback and a huge step forward. He was nearly a minute and a half faster than Garry McCoy's race time there last year and it just shows you that Kawasaki is making improvements.

To hear the rest of Randy's Expert Eye, in which the former Grand Prix star discusses the close nature of this year's championship and the increased competitiveness of the lead riders, as well as looking forward to the next round at Assen, click the video link at the top of the page.
