Hector Barberá was the quickest rider in the first qualifying practice for the 125cc race at Assen today, making light of extremely wet conditions to post a lap of 2'22.746 and seal provisional pole position for Saturday's race.

The Spanish youngster, who moved into second place in the championship with victory at Catalunya two weeks ago, looked comfortable throughout the session although he was put under a late spell of pressure right at the end by Marco Simoncelli.

Simoncelli fell just 0.091 seconds short in the tentative push for times at the end of the session, lining up in provisional second spot as he looks to repeat his wet weather win at Jerez earlier in the season. Simone Corsi also made the provisional front row despite crashing after Mirko Giansanti fell in front of him, whilst Corsi's team-mate and current series leader Andrea Dovizioso was fourth fastest.

Casey Stoner was fifth quickest on the KTM to head up the provisional second row from Dario Giuseppetti, who crashed in the morning session, Jorge Lorenzo and last year's winner Steve Jenkner.
