Jakub Smrz savours football glory

Jakub Smrz took the opportunity to revel in the success of the Czech Republic national football team, as well as honouring his Dutch colleagues and the thousands of fans set to descend on the Gauloises TT Assen this weekend.

Smrz watched the Czech team beat Holland 3-2 in the group stages of the ongoing Euro 2004 tournament in Portugal and decided to have the result emblazoned on the back of his helmet, with the rest of the lid design dedicated to the Dutch national team, with his racing number 96 printed on an orange background in the same style as the team shirts.

"I don't want anybody to get the wrong idea and think I'm having a dig at the Dutch, but it was such a great game of football and a brilliant night for my country," said Smrz, who saw the Czech Republic celebrate qualification for the quarter-finals with victory over Germany last night.

"I am in a Dutch team and I have a Dutch team-mate, so the helmet design is dedicated to them and to all the wonderful fans who will be coming to Assen this weekend. Hopefully we can put on a good show for them."
