Rain hits morning free practice

The first free practice sessions for the Gauloises TT Assen were hit by high winds, rain and cold temperatures this morning, making conditions difficult for the riders at what is already a notoriously tricky track to learn.

Experienced MotoGP campaigner Carlos Checa made the best of the conditions with the quickest time in the premier-class ahead of Valentino Rossi and Troy Bayliss, although Aprilia's Shane Byrne was perhaps even more impressive, setting the fourth fastest lap on his first ever visit to the circuit.

Michel Fabrizio also raised a few eyebrows with the eighth quickest time, whilst Marco Melandri crashed but escaped unhurt.

250cc rookie Alex De Angelis was the quickest in the quarter-litre class ahead of a host of wet specialists including Anthony West, Roby Rolfo and Arnaud Vincent, whilst Giole Pellino set the pace in 125cc from last year's wet winner Steve Jenkner.
