West heads surprise front row

There were more surprises in store in the 250cc class at Assen this afternoon, where last year's winner Anthony West clocked the fastest time to head up an unusual front row which also features fellow privateer Aprilia riders Sylvain Guintoli, Ivan Silva, who is riding this weekend as a replacement for German rider Dirk Heidolf, and Arnaud Vincent.

World Championship leader Randy De Puniet, who has crashed out at Assen for the past two successive seasons, was seventh fastest behind Honda riders Roby Rolfo and Alex Debon, whilst his nearest current challenger for the series lead Dani Pedrosa, who lies eight points behind the Frenchman, provisionally qualified just one place behind him in eighth.

Klaus Nöhles, who is riding the Honda in place of fellow German Christian Gemmel, has not provisionally qualified for the race.
