Porto takes late pole

Sebastian Porto took his third pole position of the season in the 250cc class, taking advantage of a full dry session to lower the previous record by almost half a second. Porto's last gasp lap dislodged Randy De Puniet from top spot and simultaneously denied a late pole attack from Dani Pedrosa, who had to settle for second.

De Puniet, who leads Pedrosa by eight points at the top of the championship, was relegated to third place and is joined on the front row by Toni Elias in fourth.

World Champion Manuel Poggiali starts from the second row in fifth place and is joined by Alex De Angelis, Roby Rolfo and Joan Olivé, who took his only podium here in the 125cc race three years ago.

Max Sabbatani was one of six riders not to qualify.
