Stoner sets first pole for KTM

Casey Stoner set an historic pole position for KTM at the Gauloises TT Assen today, the Austrian factory's first since joining the 125cc World Championship just over a year ago. Stoner timed his best lap to perfection, taking advantage of drying conditions to mount a cut slick front tyre and snatch pole just moments before a brief but heavy rain shower which scuppered any attempt to dislodge the Australian from top spot.

Stoner was in fact the only man looking likely to improve his time, with the chequered flag being prepared as the heavens opened and Pablo Nieto setting the closest lap but still 0.454 seconds adrift in second place. The pair are joined on the front row by Andrea Dovizioso, the series leader with a 22-point advantage over Hector Barberá, and Steve Jenkner, winner of last year's wet race.

Barberá will be looking for the sort of charge through the field that took him to victory at Catalunya two weeks ago after qualifying thirteenth fastest today, whilst the surprise of the session came from Imre Toth, the Hungarian rider lining up in tenth spot.

Female Czech sensation Marketa Janakova qualified 31st fastest from a field of 38 riders whilst wildcards Kok, Van Kreij, Van Den Dragt and Matteoni regular Jordi Carchano, who crashed on the first lap, all missed the 107% qualification time.
