Tyre gamble backfires for Edwards

Colin Edwards revealed that a risky tyre gamble which backfired was the reason for his poor performance in the final qualifying session for the Gauloises TT Assen.

The American rider, who has taken several victories in the WSB series at this circuit, could only qualify thirteenth fastest after using up his soft tyres at the start of the session in the mistaken belief that rain would force everybody onto wets for the remainder of the practice.

"We made a mistake this afternoon," explained Edwards. "The weather was really unpredictable and we were worried that it might start raining, so we decided to use the qualifying tyre at the start of the session.

"It was a gamble because after three wet sessions we really needed to work on the dry setting. It was a shame. It will be tough tomorrow starting from the fifth row but I hope to make positions up quickly and keep going forward."
