Checa rues rear grip problem

Carlos Checa blamed a lack of rear grip for his problems during the Gauloises TT Assen on Sunday after finishing in ninth place despite getting a dream start. The Spaniard led the race into the first corner after starting from the front row and looked to be a sure podium contender until he ran into difficulty on the seventh lap.

"I'm really disappointed because I was in with a chance of the podium," lamented Checa. "There was actually nothing I could do to stay in the lead group because I had no grip on the rear wheel.

"In the warm-up this morning we detected a problem because the track conditions were very different to yesterday and it was something we didn't manage to resolve. It was the same situation in the race and, even though I got a great start and led into the first corner, I was unable to defend my position under constant attacks.

"I couldn't keep a high rhythm and made a few mistakes when I was pushing hard to hold my positions. It was a shame because I've been at the top all weekend and I was convinced I could get on the podium.

"We didn't find the right combination between the geometry and the rear suspension and I paid for it dearly. Hopefully things will be different at Rio."
