Last year at Rio

Valentino Rossi won his sixth race in as many seasons at the Nelson Piquet circuit in Rio last year to extend an impressive run which also served to increase his championship advantage to 51 points over Sete Gibernau. The twelfth round of the 2003 season saw the reigning World Champion pass early leader Gibernau with ease before pulling away to leave a scrap for podium positions behind him.

Whilst Gibernau secured second place, Makoto Tamada was the surprise package of the weekend, scoring his first podium position in third place on his first visit to Brazil.

With Max Biaggi adrift in fourth, closely shadowed by Nicky Hayden, Loris Capirossi was the first non-Honda rider across the line in sixth after holding off the challenge of Tohru Ukawa, Shinya Nakano, Carlos Checa and Troy Bayliss.
