Last year at Sachsenring

Sete Gibernau outfoxed Valentino Rossi on the final corner of the Cinzano Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland in a stunning finish to last year's Sachsenring race which saw the Spaniard win his fourth race of the season.

Rossi broke free in the opening stages of the race but Gibernau fought back to lead on the last lap. However, Rossi seemed to have victory in the bag with a perfect move on the penultimate corner before drama in the final bend, when the World Champion made an uncharacteristic mistake to leave the door open for Gibernau to swoop through on the inside and take the win by just 0.060 seconds.

Elsewhere, Max Biaggi was forced to reflect on a disappointing weekend after fluffing his start from pole position and then crashing out after fighting back from tenth to third.

Biaggi's misfortune opened the way for Troy Bayliss to capture his second podium of the year on the Ducati, whilst a late crash for Marco Melandri left the Australian's team-mate Loris Capirossi free to seal two top four placings for the Italian factory for the first time in MotoGP.

Nicky Hayden took the first top five finish of his MotoGP rookie season after a close fight with Capirossi, whilst Tohru Ukawa, Shinya Nakano, Carlos Checa, Olivier Jacque and Norick Abe rounded off the top ten.

Despite conceding five points to Gibernau, Rossi remained on top of the standings by 29 points, with Biaggi trailing by 57 in third.
