Sebastián Porto set a best lap of 1'25.078 to seal front spot on the provisional 250cc grid and smashed his own pole position record here by six tenths of a second. The Argentinean rider, who started from pole in Brazil two weeks ago before suffering mechanical problems during the race, dominated this afternoon's session, with a late lap from Roberto Rolfo cutting down his advantage at the top but remaining 0.308 seconds adrift of a pole challenge.

Alex De Angelis set the third fastest time of the session at a circuit where he scored a podium in the 125cc race last year, with Randy De Puniet completing the provisional front row in fourth.

Reigning World Champion and winner of the last round in Brazil, Manuel Poggiali, was fifth quickest and heads up the provisional second row from series leader Dani Pedrosa, Toni Elias and Fonsi Nieto.
