Hector Barbera won his first ever Grand Prix at Donington Park last year after series leader Dani Pedrosa crashed out with two corners to go. Barberá, aged just 16, showed the experience of a veteran as he held off the challenges within a five rider group that included Pedrosa, Stefano Perugini, Lucio Cecchinello and Andrea Dovizioso.

Cecchinello fell at Goddards corner two thirds into the distance, remounting to take tenth place, leaving four riders to challenge for victory. Pedrosa gained two positions on the last lap and then ran his Honda hot into the Melbourne loop, running slightly wide and handing Perugini the opportunity to make an aggressive move on the inside line that knocked the Spaniard to the ground.

Dovizioso claimed second while Perugini visited the podium for the first time since the opening race in Japan, revitalising his challenge to Pedrosa at the top of the championship. Alex De Angelis recovered from a crash in qualifying to take fourth while Casey Stoner was fifth.
