Marco Melandri pulls out of the race

Marco Melandri will not be taking part in the Cinzano British Grand Prix at Donington Park this afternoon after failing to recover sufficiently from a broken thumb sustained in Fridays morning free practice.

The Italian youngster was knocked off his bike by Alex Hofmann but returned to action and bravely qualified in eleventh place under heavy anaesthetic. However, unpredictable weather conditions on Sunday morning at Donington Park convinced him not to risk further injury and the former 250cc World Champion will watch the action from the sidelines.

I am really disappointed because the bike is really good here and I think I could have ridden a good race, commented Melandri. In addition, I only live a few miles from the circuit so this is like my second home Grand Prix.

But having struggled through yesterdays practice I have decided that I have no choice. At the very best in the dry I could have finished 11th or 12th but with a big risk of hurting myself further. A wet race might have been less painful, but with an even higher risk of falling.

I also have to think of my fellow riders. It is one thing to take risks, but quite another to put everybody else on the starting grid in danger. Now I will take some rest and hopefully come back to Brno fully fit.
