Aoyama fights back to 9th at Donington after early crash

Japanese rider Hiroshi Aoyama regretted immediately the clash he had with Toni Elías in the final corner of the first lap of the Cinzano British Grand Prix, where for the first time he started from the front row of the grid. After the subsequent spill that dropped him to last position, he embarked on a spectacular comeback that allowed him to place inside the top ten just in front of Sylvain Guintoli, but it could have been so much more.

Although his gearbox was not working so well, the promising youngster gained position after position and was among the points by lap ten.

"Practice went really well for us and I got a great start on Sunday. Even though I made a few early moves I was riding very relaxed. I am disappointed about the incident with Elías because I lost so much time and the chance of a good result," he reflected, after taken his best result of the season so far seven days previously at Sachsenring.

"Luckily nothing happened during the crash. In truth I knew I could still make a good race. The next GP I want to try for the podium, which should then lead onto my first win in the World Championships."
