West takes ninth in WSS round

Leading 250cc World Championship privateer Anthony West added to his growing reputation with a top ten finish in the World Supersport round at Brands Hatch on Sunday. West, who was making the one-off appearance on a Honda in agreement with his Aprilia Abruzzo team, took ninth place in a split race won by championship leader Karl Muggeridge.

"It was a bit of fun," commented West, who rode alongside Alessio Corradi and Denis Sacchetti as part of Team Italia Megabike. "In the first race I felt better and thought I was stronger than the two guys in front of me, could have passed them but they stopped the race.

"In race two I missed a gear on lap one and the Ducati rider got past me and held me up a lot. That factory bike is so quick and he brakes really late. Supersport was new experience, something different."

Muggeridge attacked on the last lap to snatch a seemingly sure win for Sebastien Charpentier after stalking the Frenchman for the entire two part race. The race was halted when Fabien Foret crashed out and was run over by two other riders, suffering a broken left ankle and what was feared at first to be a fractured femur.

Jurgen van den Goorbergh, who rode alongside West in the 2001 500cc World Championship, finished third but lost ground in the title chase as Muggeridge now leads by 24 points.
