John Hopkins set the pace in the first free practice for the Gauloises Grand Prix Ceske Republiky this morning, clocking his best lap on a damp Brno track midway through the session before further rain prevented any other rider from improving his time.

In fact, the rain fell so heavily that the majority of riders stayed in their pit garages for the remainder of the session, even though a wet first qualifying practice is predicted for this afternoon.

The only session run in the dry this morning was the 125cc class, with series leader Andrea Dovizioso the fastest man. In the 250cc class Randy de Puniet topped the time sheets ahead of wet specialist and fellow Frenchman Arnaud Vincent.
