Simoncelli takes provisional pole at wet Brno

Marco Simoncelli set pole position for the Gauloises Grand Prix Ceske Republiky today in wet conditions which have plagued the Brno circuit since rain began falling shortly after the 125cc morning free practice. Simoncelli, who took his only victory so far in the wet at Jerez earlier this year, was 0.648 seconds quicker than nearest rival Andrea Ballerini, who also took his only career victory in the rain at Phillip Island last October.

Casey Stoner, who led both those races before crashing out, dominated for much of the session on his return to action after recovering from a broken collarbone and was third fastest ahead of Spanish youngster Julian Simon, who completes the front row.

Czech rider Lukas Pesek gave a hint of home glory, particularly if the conditions are the same for Sunday's race, clocking the fifth fastest time to head up the second row from Simone Corsi, Gabor Talmacsi and series leader Andrea Dovizioso, who had been quickest in the dry morning practice.
