Debón to ride in Portugal despite injury

Alex Debón has decided to take part in the Grande Premio Marlboro de Portugal this weekend despite still suffering from the left shoulder injury which prevented him from taking part in the 250cc race at Brno two weeks ago.

The Spaniard suffered a slight dislocation and aggravated an old collarbone injury in a crash during the morning warm-up and has been told he will need surgery. However, Debon was keen not to miss any of the remaining six races of the season and has postponed the operation until November.

"The doctors told me it would take two months to recover from the operation, which would rule me out for the season, so I decided to postpone it," commented Debon, who lies 25 points behind Ant West in the chase for the title of best privateer. "It is really painful, similar to the injury Melandri had last year, but I hope it is my last piece of bad luck for the season.

"I have to think positive. I know that I will only be 70% fit in Portugal but we will have new material from Honda so hopefully Estoril will signal the start of some good results for us."
