Last year at Estoril

Valentino Rossi eased to his fifth victory of the season and opened up his championship advantage to 46 points in the MotoGP race at Estoril last year. After the close racing and excitement of Brno two weeks previously, when Rossi had beaten Sete Gibernau by just 0.042 seconds, the eleventh round of the season was a comparatively tranquil affair, with Rossi and Max Biaggi making a break from the pack.

Rossi toyed with his great rival until the halfway stage, stepping up the pace and making an unstoppable surge for victory which left Biaggi floundering in a lonely second place.

The main action in the closing stages took place behind the two Italians, where their compatriot Loris Capirossi fought it out for the final podium position with Gibernau. The Spaniard dived into third place at the final chicane but Capirossi summoned on the awesome power of the Ducati to recover superiority in a straight drag race to the line.

Tohru Ukawa recorded his best result in eight races by crossing the line in fifth. Troy Bayliss beat Marco Melandri into sixth while Carlos Checa, Nicky Hayden and Makoto Tamada rounded out the top ten.
