Elías rejects Aprilia rumours

Toni Elías spoke out over rumours linking him with a return to Aprilia in 2005 after provisionally qualifying second fastest on the provisional grid at Estoril riding the Honda on Friday. Elías insisted that he was happy at the Japanese factory despite a tough first season and publicly thanked them for their support.

"I want to take this opportunity to roundly deny suggestions in the media that I am close to returning to Aprilia," stated Elías, who won six races with the Italian factory in two seasons. "I have fond memories of my time with them but there has been no contact – not with the factory or with any other team.

"I am pleased that we were able to prove today that I made the right choice switching factory and I want to publicly thank Honda for the way they have treated me all season –the team, Dani Amatriain and in particular Fortuna, who have made me feel enormously welcome.

"Hopefully this will put an end to all the unfounded speculation which has appeared about me in the last week."

On his performance today, when Sebastián Porto snatched pole position on the very last lap, Elías added: "It was a good couple of sessions for me – the only shame is that I didn't realise Porto was following me on my fast lap and was able to nick pole but the most important thing is we were up there throughout.

"Tomorrow we have to work even harder to make sure we can improve as much as possible in the second session."
