Youichi Ui to ride for WCM

Youichi Ui is set for a sensational debut in the MotoGP class after agreeing to ride for the WCM team at the Camel Grand Prix of Japan. After Michel Fabrizio's decision to quit the team in favour of a one-off ride with Aprilia at Estoril two weeks ago, Peter Clifford moved swiftly to secure the services of Ui, who was himself sacked by the Abruzzo Aprilia team in the previous round at Brno.

Clifford's offer could not have been better timed for Ui, who was desperate to find a way to ride at Motegi without forcing another rider out of any team.

"A lot of my fans had already bought tickets to come to Motegi, so I was desperate not to let them down," said Ui. "Now I have the chance, not only to race at Motegi, but to race in the MotoGP class. It is an incredible opportunity for me and all I can do is say thanks to Peter Clifford and the rest of the team."

Having never ridden a four-stroke motorcycle before, the 125cc veteran admits it will be a tough challenge to even qualify for Sunday's race but says he will give everything to the cause. "As far as I am concerned, a motorcycle is a motorcycle and I will ride it as hard as I can, although it is true that I have never ridden a four-stroke and it will take time to adapt.

"My aim is to get inside the 107% qualifying mark and, if I can do that, to finish the race. It's been a tough season for me and it would be nice to end it in a positive way."

The first difficulty for the diminutive Japanese rider, however, will be getting on the bike in the first place! "I already tried sitting on the bike and my feet don't even touch the floor, so that could be a problem!" he laughed.
