De Angelis maintains top five aim

Alex de Angelis took another step towards his aim of a top five finish in the 250cc World Championship with a gutsy ride in baking hot conditions at Motegi on Sunday. The San Marino rider currently lies fifth but is coming under increasing pressure from Hiroshi Aoyama and said sixth place at the Camel Grand Prix of Japan was a satisfactory result.

"I am not happy but reasonably satisfied with sixth place," said De Angelis. "I was following (Anthony) West when he crashed in front of me so I decided it was better just to finish in my position rather than risk anything by pushing harder.

"I have got to think about the championship with only four races to go so I settled for sixth. At some part of the race the front and rear tyres started sliding together which was very strange. I suppose it was down to the heat and at that point I just wanted to finish the race. Sixth and ten points is not bad at all."
