Pedrosa hoping to celebrate birthday with another win

Dani Pedrosa celebrated his 19th birthday today but was keen to keep the champagne on ice, at least until Saturday. The Spanish youngster is aiming for his sixth victory of the season this weekend, a result which would take him to within striking distance of the 250cc World Championship title in the next round at Sepang.

Should Pedrosa win the title he will become the youngest rider ever to be crowned World Champion twice, even younger than Manuel Poggiali and Valentino Rossi, but today insisted his focus was purely on this race.

"It's always nice to get to know new places and new circuits and Qatar is really special because it's so different to the places we already know," commented Pedrosa, who leads Randy de Puniet by 47 points at the top of the standings. "It will be a tough weekend because it will be so hot but in that sense it should prepare us for Malaysia.

"We'll be working against the clock for the whole Grand Prix because it will be crucial to get an idea for the track in the first session and I guess we'll all need a little more time than usual to find the best setting. On Wednesday they took us round the track in a car so we really had to pay attention and pick up as many details as possible. Tomorrow we'll find out who learnt the most!"
