Edwards sets early pace in Qatar

Colin Edwards was the fastest rider in the first ever MotoGP practice session at the Losail International Circuit in Qatar this morning. With ambient temperatures touching 37º and light dust covering the track surface, the Telefonica Movistar Honda rider clocked a best time of 2'07.144 to hold off Fortuna Gauloises Yamaha rider Marco Melandri by 0.395 seconds.

Edwards and Melandri were considerably faster than the rest of the field, with third-quickest Sete Gibernau over a second off the pace of his American team-mate. Behind Gibernau the times were much closer, with the next ten riders all within one second. World Champion and current series leader Valentino Rossi was seventh fastest.

Toni Elías set the pace for much of the 250cc session, lapping consistently at the top of the time sheets with a display of aggressive and confident riding, but was finally usurped on the last lap by Sebastian Porto. In the 125cc class Alvaro Bautista made history as the fastest rider in the first ever Grand Prix practice session in Qatar.
