Poggiali out after freak squash accident

Manuel Poggiali has been ruled out of the Marlboro Grand Prix of Qatar after a freak accident playing squash. The Aprilia rider fell through a glass partition during a light game at his hotel on Wednesday evening and required around 50 stitches to his legs and shoulder. Clinica Mobile staff expect him to be out of action for two weeks, meaning he will also miss the next round, the Marlboro Malaysian Grand Prix.

"Manuel has a deep cut to his left calf which has ruptured the muscle," confirmed Doctor Rubbini. "He also has cuts to his right leg and right shoulder, but they are nothing major.

"The problem is that simply by walking on his calf he could reopen the wound, so there is absolutely no way he can ride. He will definitely be out for this race and Malaysia, but we expect him to be ready for Australia in two weeks' time."

The injury is the latest instalment in a miserable season for the 250cc World Champion, who has won just one race and currently lies tenth in the standings with just 79 points, compared with 190 at the same stage last season.
