Garry McCoy joins Aprilia for last three races

Garry McCoy is set for a surprise return to MotoGP after being confirmed by the MS Aprilia Racing team as Shane Byrne's replacement for the final three rounds of the 2004 season.

McCoy will make his debut on the three-cylinder machine at next weekend's Marlboro Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang and will also appear in front of his home crowd at Phillip Island on October 17 before the season's finale at Valencia in Spain.

The former Yamaha and Kawasaki rider, who took three 500cc victories in 2000, has spent the season riding a Ducati in World Superbikes. However, with the series ending this weekend at Magny-Cours the Australian was free to negotiate his shock Grand Prix comeback.

"Garry contacted us after Japan and from that moment we were seriously considering him for a ride on the RS Cube," explained Aprilia racing chief Jan Witteveen.

"He brings with him great quality, but he is also the only rider who has no contract problems with the World Superbike championship finishing on Sunday. We are looking forward to working him because we know he is a rider of great talent."
