Toni Elias went from pole to victory for the second successive race at Sepang last season, following on from his success at Motegi a week previously. The Spaniard kept his slim championship hopes alive with his third victory in four races and his fourth podium in the last five rounds.

Elias was so dominant that at one stage he was stretching a second a lap over Manuel Poggiali and Fonsi Nieto, who did his best to help out Elías at the top of the championship by challenging Poggiali for second place with a determined last-lap challenge.

Roby Rolfo shook off the challenge of an under-strength and sick Randy de Puniet to take fourth place while Franco Battaini, Naoki Matsudo, Sebastián Porto, who had to pull into the pits for a jump start penalty, Ant West and Alex Baldolini filled the top ten positions.

Elias' sixth victory made him the second most successful Spanish 250cc rider ever behind Sito Pons.
