Rossi comfortably quickest in second free practice

Valentino Rossi distinguished himself from his rivals with a series of quick lap times in the second free practice session for the Marlboro Malaysian Grand Prix. Rossi best effort of 2'02.380 was 0.014 seconds quicker than Makoto Tamada's record-breaking provisional pole time from yesterday and some 0.706 seconds quicker than his nearest challenger, Alex Barros, this morning.

Nicky Hayden showed a return to the form he had demonstrated at this track during winter testing, knocking over a second off his provisional qualifying time with the third fastest lap of the session. Colin Edwards made even more progress than his fellow American, improving by 1.485 seconds on his disappointing first day.

Dani Pedrosa also made steps forward, taking a couple of tenths of his provisional time to top the second free practice session for the 250cc class. Pedrosa was over half a second quicker than nearest challenger Toni Elías, whilst provisional pole setter Sebastián Porto was fourth behind the impressive Alex de Angelis.

Andrea Dovizioso, who just needs a podium finish on Sunday to be proclaimed 125cc World Champion, again laid down his intentions after setting provisional pole yesterday. The Italian was this morning over a second quicker than the rest of the field, followed by Jorge Lorenzo and Casey Stoner.
