Poggiali to return in Australia

250cc World Champion Manuel Poggiali arrived in Australia on Wednesday ready to make his return to competitive action after missing the last two rounds in Qatar and Malaysia. Poggiali required fifty stitches in his leg after falling through a glass window when playing squash but has been given the all clear from Doctor Costa to return. "I watched the race on television but I find it impossible to watch the boys competing from my sofa," said Poggiali. "My leg is improving. If I had to run a marathon I would have a problem but it should be okay to ride the bike." Poggiali was replaced at the last round in Malaysia by Marcelino Lucchi. It was the veteran Italian's first race since 2001 but he missed out on the points by just 0.7 seconds in 16th place.

"It was a shame I didn't score any points because I lost touch with the group in front of a me at a critical point of the race," said the 47 year old. "It was tough because I wasn't used to using these tyres – I've spent the last three seasons riding the four-stroke so it wasn't easy. "Still, I'd like to say thank to Aprilia for this opportunity. It was a nice experience to compete in another Grand Prix at 47 years of age and I really enjoyed being back on a bike."
