Improving De Angelis clocks record pace

Alex de Angelis continued his strong run of qualifying form in the second half of the season with a new 250cc pole record at Phillip Island this afternoon. The San Marino rookie clocked a best time of 1'32.986 to hold off the challenge of compatriot Manuel Poggiali, who made a successful return to action after two weeks out through injury despite a minor crash at the end of the session.

Sebastián Porto and Fonsi Nieto complete an all-Aprilia front row in third and fourth respectively whilst Dani Pedrosa, who needs just two points to seal the title this weekend, was seventh fastest. Pedrosa is joined on the second row by Franco Battiani in fifth and Toni Elías and Randy de Puniet in sixth and eighth respectively.

Meanwhile, Anthony West suffered one of the fastest crashes on record, crashing his Aprilia on the entry to the fearsome first corner at almost 260km/h. West was airlifted to Melbourne for precautionary checks after reporting pains in his neck and hand.
