West taken to hospital for checks after crash

Anthony West suffered one of the fastest crashes on record today, losing the front end of his 250cc Aprilia on the entry to the fearsome first corner at Phillip Island at almost 260km/h during the first qualifying practice.

The 23 year old Australian was thrown violently into the gravel but seemingly escaped without serious injury. However, he has been airlifted to Melbourne by helicopter for precautionary checks after reporting pains in his neck and hand. Clinica Mobile staff said that they are confident that none of his major bones are broken, but West will be submitted to further x-rays and scans and seems certain to miss his home race.

Todays crash was the latest episode of an unlucky run for West, who was knocked from his bike on the first lap of the race in Malaysia last week by Roby Rolfo and cracked his left wrist.
