Eye trouble for Melandri

Marco Melandri was forced to retire from the Cinzano Australian Grand Prix because of a problem with his eye, it emerged on Sunday evening. The Italian youngster started well from the fourth row and was up to eighth position but was forced to pull out after sixteen laps.

"During the morning warm-up something got inside my left eye," explained Melandri. "Before the race I washed it with a specific eye drop three times, but after one lap and a half I couldn't see anything because I had some liquid coming out.

"When I was riding with the group it wasn't so bad as I had the other riders as markers, but when I lost ground on them I couldn't do anything because of my poor visibility and I didn't want to take any risks. So that's why I retired."
