Nakano closes on top ten

Shinya Nakano closed in on his goal of a top ten overall finish in the MotoGP World Championship after another points-scoring finish at Phillip Island on Sunday. The Kawasaki rider lies just three points behind Ruben Xaus with one race remaining – the Spaniard's home round at Valencia next week.

"It was a very hard race for me," reflected Nakano after finishing twelfth in the Cinzano Australian Grand Prix. "Right from the start I found it difficult to push hard and force the pace. Even after I passed Alex (Hofmann) it was not possible to ride as fast as I would have liked.

"Then there was a great battle with Ruben Xaus and Carlos Checa and I was hoping to have an opportunity to overtake them late in the race, but towards the end my lap times dropped away. I was suffering with a lack of traction around the left-handers, always a problem at this track with so many fast corners.

"At least now I am closer to the top ten in the championship, which was my aim at the start of the season. It will be tough to beat Ruben at Valencia but I'll definitely be trying my best as always."
