Nightmare continues for De Puniet

Nightmare continues for De Puniet

Randy de Puniets miserable end to the 2004 season continued in Australia on Sunday, the Frenchman crashing out of the 250cc race after another weekend fraught by mechanical problems.

Having been in contention for the World Championship title for much of the season before a shocking run of bad luck and poor form ended his chances, De Puniet admits he is under pressure to deliver in the final round at Valencia before the winter transfer roundabout gets into full swing.

That was my hardest weekend of the whole season, said De Puniet. In practice I just couldnt seem to stop breaking engines as well as a gear box. Then on Saturday afternoon I managed to set the fifth fastest time, the Sunday morning warm-up went well and I was really confident about the race.

Unfortunately, I completely messed up the start. There was something wrong with the engine and it wasnt accelerating properly, so that made it really difficult to overtake. Only the top speed allowed me to pass people down the straight.

I managed to make it back up to fifth place and I just decided to push as hard as I could to get with the lead group and fight for a place on the podium. But I was pushing too hard and I lost the front end. It was a catastrophe really if it wasnt for the bad start I reckon I could have been on the podium.

Now we go to Valencia and it will be another tough one, but I hope the last race of the season can be a good one for me. Its a difficult time because to be brutally honest my results at the moment are not doing me any favours with regard to getting a good ride for next season. Well have to see what happens.
