First lap onboard with Edwards

The Cinzano Australian Grand Prix represented an important challenge for Colin Edwards, who took his place on the starting grid with more pressure than ever on his shoulders.

After the announcement on the eve of the race that he would be swapping Honda for Yamaha in 2005 and a huge contingent of family and friends watching from the grandstands, Edwards lined up on the second row of the grid directly behind his present and future team-mates – Sete Gibernau and Valentino Rossi – looking for his first and only win of the season so far.

Almost as soon as the red lights were out, Edwards bore witness to some of the most dramatic moments of the entire race, with Ducati rider Troy Bayliss storming past him down the straight after an electric start to his home GP and Honda rivals Alex Barros and Max Biaggi both outbraking the American into the first corner.

Whilst Edwards became embroiled in a tangle with Biaggi, all manner of chaos ensued at the front, where the leaders tussled for positions and Rossi ran off track, only to make it back onto the tarmac in control of his Yamaha.
